We at K&L Gates believe it's never too early to start thinking about your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Join us for the following CPD sessions:

Session 1: 12.30 pm – 1.30 pm | The In-House Lawyer Conundrum – Balancing the Ethical and Business Roles

Partner Ian Dorey  of our Restructuring & Insolvency Group, will present this essential session on ethics. Learn more about:

  • the role of in-house counsel as the moral compass for companies
  • what ethical standards do in-house counsel need to abide by 
  • how to balance those roles with the business pressure

CPD Points: This session will count as 1 hour / point towards Practical Legal Ethics training requirements.

Session 2: 1.30 pm – 2.00 pm | Duties of Director and Officers – Effective Risk Management

A significant area of personal exposure to risk that in-house counsel face relates to duties as directors and officers of companies. In this session, Partner Philip Vickery and Senior Associate Lea Fua will:

  • Examine the key duties and obligations of directors and officers and potential personal exposure
  • Discuss strategies for in-house counsel to appropriately manage the relevant risks.

CPD Points: This session will need to be coupled with another 30 minute Practice Management and Business Skills to count as 1 hour / point towards training requirements.

Session 3: 2.15 pm – 2.45pm | Cyber Security

William Ulyate, Queensland General Manager of Content Security Pty Ltd, will present this informative session to cover:

  • an overview of cyberattacks in Australia
  • modern hacking tools and techniques used by cyber criminals
  • a simulated ransomware cyberattack on a hypothetical business (what happens? how?)
  • why a cyber security awareness culture is vital.

CPD Points: This session will need to be coupled with another 30 minute Practice Management and Business Skills to count as 1 hour / point towards training requirements.

Session 4: 2.45 pm – 3.15 pm | Mediation Skills

Special Counsel Gregg Sivyer will present on key mediation skills and how these can be used effectively during disputes.

Session 5: 3.15 pm – 3.45 pm | Panel Discussion Negotiation Skills (How, What and When)

Partner Philip Vickery will moderate a panel discussion on negotiation skills, including which skills are best employed when to maximise your chances of success. The Panel will be made up of:

Session 6: 4.00 pm – 5.00 pm | Officer Prosecutions and Accessorial Liability: Hot topics in LEWS

There have been a number of prosecutions and convictions of company directors and officers under WHS legislation in the last 12 months, and increased interest by the Fair Work regulator in prosecuting for accessorial liability under the Fair Work legislation. Special Counsel Ashley Uren will explore these developments and what they mean for in-house counsel, officers of corporations and business owners.

CPD Points: This session will count as 1 hour / point towards Substantive Law training requirements.
