Celebrating Women Professionals Through the Culinary Arts

We invite you to join the women professionals of K&L Gates on Thursday, September 27th, for a networking reception at The Observatory at America's Square featuring panoramic views of our nation’s Capitol.

Furthering our commitment to celebrate the entrepreneurship of women, this year we are delighted to feature several leading female pastry and dessert chefs, as well as women in the wine industry, who will showcase their culinary work, serve and discuss wine, and share their expertise. Our featured guests include:

  • Mary Bruce Leigh, Wine Director for Ace Beverage
    • Mary Bruce Leigh, Wine Director at Ace Beverage, grew a love of French wine into a profession, working in various levels of the wine industry before committing to retail . Ace Beverage is the oldest wine retailer in DC, family owned and opening just after the end of Prohibition.
  • Yael Krigman, Owner of Baked by Yael
    • Yael Krigman, Recovering Attorney and Owner of Baked by Yael, nut-free & kosher bakery across from the National Zoo, serving up award-winning cake pops, bagels, and other delicious baked goods.
  • Sarah Seligman, Founder of Bakefully Yours
    • Sarah Seligman is the founder and owner of Bakefully Yours, a Grain-free bakery in Sterling, Virginia, specializing in Paleo and Vegan desserts
  • Janine Copeland and Stacey Khory-Diaz, Owners of Dio Wine Bar

  • Doron Petersan, Owner of Fare Well
    • A neighborhood staple on H Street NE, Fare Well is a plant-based diner, bakery and bar offering comforting, house-made cooking all day, every day. Owner Doron Petersan also helms award-winning vegan bakery and cafe, Sticky Fingers.
  • Swati Bose, Co-owner and Beverage Director of Flight Wine Bar
    • Swati Bose developed her passion for wine and food while working as a law clerk and turned her passion into a career by earning a degree in restaurant management at the French Culinary Institute in New York. In 2014, she and her husband, Kabir Amir opened Flight Wine Bar in D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood, where they offer a selection of approachable and unique wines, a seasonal chef-driven menu, and generous service.
  • Magda Gilpin, Sommelier, at Masseria
    • Magda Gilpin is a sommelier at Masseria by Nicholas Stefanelli - one Michelin Star restaurant in the Union Market district. She's responsible for wine purchases, developing an extensive, award winning wine list, staff wine education and most importantly for helping the guests choose a bottle of wine that will perfectly pair with Masseria's creative menu and with their own tastes. She holds an Advanced Sommelier title through the Court of Master Sommeliers.
  • Niki Lang, Sommelier and Partner of Maxwell Park
    • Niki is a certified Sommelier through the Court of Masters studying for the Advanced level.
  • Teresa Mollegas, Owner of Pie Sisters
    • Pie Sisters is a family-owned, handmade, gourmet pie shop.
  • Rabia Kamara, Founder of Ruby’s Scoops
    • Ruby Scoops is a local and online retailer of premium small batch ice creams, sorbets, sherbets, and desserts, all handcrafted and scratch made in Union Kitchen by Chef & Owner, Rabia Kamara. Ruby Scoops uses Kreider Farms dairy, cage free eggs, cane sugar, and seasonal fruit from local farms to bring you the finest, richest ice creams, sorbets, sherbets and baked goods.
  • Karlene Falcone, Owner of Sweet Cakes by K
    • Karlene is a self-taught dessert and pastry baker. She started baking for her family when she was young and began setting up dessert tables and selling her treats about 3 1/2 years ago.
  • Angela Winter, Co-owner of Sweet Teensy Bakery
    • Cooking and baking are at the heart of the family in which Angela was raised. Angela was the owner of Sweet Teensy Bakery, a successful bakery she had started in Boise, Idaho. Angela (nicknamed Teensy as a child) had relocated the bakery in 2010 to a commercial kitchen in Bethesda, Maryland. In early Spring 2014, Angela Winter and Rick Gossett met at a fundraising event in Washington, D.C. and quickly knew that they shared a vision for a shop that offered superior baked goods and other foods—made from scratch with only premium ingredients—as well as exceptional customer service!
  • Carlee Pipitone, Founder of Tenth Harvest
    • Carlee’s passion for wine is rooted in a love of all things Italian, and through her love of wine she developed relationships with winemakers who are now part of Tenth Harvest. Tenth Harvest is both an importer and distributor focused on estate wineries that are usually family-owned small businesses.

The chefs and wine experts will be available for discussions regarding their work as well as their businesses’ challenges and successes. The event will also support DC Central Kitchen. As the nation’s first and leading community kitchen, DC Central Kitchen develops and operates social ventures targeting the cycle of hunger and poverty.
